Mosaic DIY – tray made from leftover tiles

I have always loved mosaic and thought I would give it a go myself. I got this old tray and I envisaged how beautiful it could look with a little ‘lift’. I decided attempting mosaic diy tray and this is what I came up with.

I painted it in Annie Sloan’s old ochre and waxed, to give it a little dated look I also used a little bit of dark wax and distressed it a little.

Then came the fun part – smashing some leftover tiles and doing the mosaic. Be careful when you are smashing the tiles and wear some protective gear, as the little bits are flying around!

I used some tile adhesive and grout to stick the pieces on. Ā There is no particular way of doing it just put the pieces together in no particular order, it is easy to manouvre the pieces as the grout is nice and smooth and doesn’t dry instantly.

Once the tray wasĀ dry, I went over with some grout and wiped the tiles and let it dry.

This is what the finished product turned out to look like!

  1. HI Evija, I love this little project it turned out perfect! I have never made anything using broken ceramic tiles, but I have sure seen a lot, some with broken china and dishes.
